Write Now Relief

Write Now Relief

How you can help the victims of Sandy and also get a little first aid for your novel!

WHAT: Bid on a 50-page critique of your novel by a published novelist! Highest bidder will send their amount to Samaritans Purse for their relief efforts for the victims of Superstorm Sandy.

WHEN: Begins Friday, November 9, ends Friday midnight EST November 16.

HOW: Head to the blog of the author you’d like to have critique your 50 pages. Find their Write Now Relief blog post and place your bid in the comments section of that post. Monitor it closely so that you can re-bid! Check back on this Facebook page for updates on all the bids. If you are the high bidder at the end of the week, make your donation and email a copy of your receipt to the author with your 50 pages. It’s that easy.

How much is a 50-page critique worth?

Most authors and editors can easily charge $35 an hour and a fifty-page critique is well over three hours of labor. But this labor of love is for victims who have lost everything. Their need is huge. One blogger who hosted a similar campaign last week had a top donation bid of $1,000 for a 50-page critique!
The minimum bid for Mrs. Paul to do is $50.

What will the critique entail?

The author you choose will read your fifty pages with an eye to giving you insights and feedback on all aspects of your story excerpt, including plot, character, story arc, mechanics, pacing, and reader appeal.

What is Samaritan’s Purse?

Samaritan's Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan's Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God's love through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Here is a video from Samaritans Purse on their efforts to help Sandy’s victims.

How do I donate to Samaritans Purse?

You can head to the Samaritan’s Purse webpage on Hurricane Sandy http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/articles/hurricane_sandy/

and click on the GIVE link imbedded on the page. Whether you are the highest bidder or not, do consider donating to this effort.

How do I start?

Check Susan Meissner’s blog on Thursday, Nov 8 for the full list of participating authors and their blog addresses. Pick an author, head to their blog on Friday, November 9, and make your opening bid.

WOW! Thanks, ladies. We are going to bless some people through SP and give the hurricane victims some real relief. I've been through several hurricanes when we lived in south Texas. Nothing to compare to Sandy.

Would you consider giving reviews to the two highest bidders? :)

Donita K. Paul said...

I'm sorry, Lisa. I want to do an excellent job of critiquing. Fifty pages will taked me five or six hours. I can't afford to spend the time on two, and I wouldn't want to shirk by trying to cram two critiques in to the time I can give for one.

Did you want the critique from the winning bidder as described in the rules (send receipt with payment this weekend) , or is it possible for folks still writing to send the fifty pages later or even early 2013. Just wondering the timeline possibilities. Thanks for doing this!

Lisa Godfrees said...

I understand. Thanks for answering.

A follow-up question. Did you have a timeline for submission of the 50 pages? I'm half way through my novel and should finish this month (nanowrimo), but I'd like to polish/edit before I send it to you so I don't waste your time.

As a matter of fact, after the holidays would be better for me. I 've got a deadline looming.

They want the donation to go to Sumaritan's Purse this weekend. You do not have to give me your manuscript until you feel it is ready. I believe we should put a 4 month time limit on that since that will prevent a procrastination disaster. So, we could say that the highest bidder has to get the doc. to me by March 16th.

bid = 155

Just checking to see how the auction went. Did any bids come in after mine? Who won? :D

Lisa Godfrees said...

I assume Mir Writes won. It's a little confusing because I checked at midnight on the 16th and mine was the last comment, then I got an email at 4 pm yesterday (the 17th) with her bid of $155 from the 16th at 10 pm. So I assume she bid on the 16th but her comment wasn't approved until the 17th. Is that right?

I've been waiting for an official post so I know if I need to donate money to Samaritan's Purse. I'm OK if I didn't win, just could you please clarify? Thanks!

I emailed you yesterday, it was a forward of my payment to Samaritan's Purse. The subject is Samaritan's Purse and my email address is lisa(dot)godfrees(at)gmail(dot)com. Could you see if you got it? I sent it at 7:24 pm (central). I'm actually glad you posted because I was wondering if you got it. I will go ahead and try to resend it now as well.

Thanks!

Lisa Godfrees said...

Did you get either of my emails?
